Finn, glanced at Donal, and dropped back into his seat.

“I have nothing to hide. Ask away.”

Chapter 9

Edward spent the next hour asking Finn numerous questions. Some seemed irrelevant, others incisive, and Edward was relentless, subtly extracting even the most minor detail.

Finn continued to deny any involvement, but Edward was satisfied it was he who committed both crimes. Some of Finn’s answers led Edward to suspect he had acted under orders, astute enough to accept the former would not betray who that was.

“Thank you, Mr Brennan, that will be all.” Edward had not taken any notes and maintained a polite manner throughout. He stood to take his leave, adding his appreciation to Donal for orchestrating this interview. His hand was on the doorknob when he turned and looked steadily at Finn.

“Whatever your assertions, I know you did this. I was already half-convinced following an earlier discussion. Your behaviour and responses during this last hour have merely compounded my belief. That said, you know I can do nothing; there is no concrete evidence and, on its own, my supposition is insufficient.

“I shall report my findings. Any further decision is up to my superiors. It would behove you not to do anything stupid while I await their instructions. If anything untoward befalls Lord Downe, or you are possessed with an unfortunate urge to use my sister as leverage, I will not be so… understanding, and retribution will be swift.” He held Finn’s gaze until the man inclined his head in acknowledgement.

Bowing to Donal, Edward left the room, only to pop back in seconds later, and with a wicked grin remarked, “Then again, who knows what might happen while guilt is being established. People disappear all the time.” Without waiting for a reply, he departed, leaving Donal and Finn to figure out a solution they could live with.
